Quit Smoking for Your Health

Post date: November 13, 2009

Trying to quit smoking can be a challenge for many people but a challenge many people are willing to take for many reasons. Some have already been diagnosed with medical problems such as heart problems or diabetes all because of smoking and try to quit to prevent more. Others simply want to be healthier and avoid potential health problems such as Lung Caner and COPD. There is always a reason to quit, and BBC News just added one more, dental problems.

Along with the obvious health risks with smoking such as lung cancer and heart disease, this new study shows an increase in oral cancers, diminished ability of taste buds and rejection of certain dental procedures. Smoking can also cause the gums to recede, leaving the roots of the tooth exposed.

Dental devices such as dentures and implants can be a huge benefit to those in desperate need of teeth. For example, implants which work similar to dentures, provide a false tooth to replace a missing one. They are used in people who have lost individual teeth, to create a bridge and for better support to older dentures. Implants work by functioning as the “root” of the tooth because they are made from titanium and are implanted in the jaw. They are coated with a substance called hydroxyapatite which acts as the same chemical makeup of our own bones making the implants more effective than dentures.

It is important for the dentist to be sure the patient is right for implants before performing the procedure. The biggest problem with implant rejection is smoking and other diseases such as diabetes which both affect the amount of blood that reaches the implant. The BBC study reported that is a patient stopped smoking before and for eight weeks after receiving the implant, it would greatly increase the odds of it being effective.

Implants were not the only dental procedure affected by smoking, teeth removals and fillings also showed problems due to smoking. Smoking can make the antibiotics and creams much less effective before and during dental procedures.

According to a study done by the American Dental Association, 32% of smokers needed to have a filling replaced, 10.1% needed a tooth extraction and 22.5% needed a major dental cleaning. Smoking can also be a factor in the loss of jaw bone, gum disease leading to tooth loss, and increased plaque and tartar build up. According to WebMD, 90% of patients with oral cancer use tobacco products and of those 90%, 37% who keep using tobacco products after having one cancerous lesion removed will develop another compared to 6% of those who quit smoking.

Tobacco secession is the only way to combat not only dental problems but other health problems. Quitting is never easy and a challenge every smoker fears, however almost every smoker fears cancer too and quitting won’t kill, but cancer will.

There are many ways available to quit smoking. Some patients choose to try prescription treatments such as Zyban or Wellbutrin which can help curb cravings. Others try over the counter treatments such as the nicotine patch or gum. Other nontraditional treatments include hypnosis, acupuncture and herbal remedies. Those who are interesting in quitting should speak with their dentist of physician to develop a plan and find out what works best for the patient. Since each person is different, each individual plan will be different. Some people use a combination of treatments to quit. It is important to remember quitting is never easy but the health risks are just too high to not quit now.

Habits of My Own

Post date: November 7, 2009

When people are tired, sad, lonely or even happy, they turn to comfort food. Everyone has their own personal, favorite comfort food. For me, it is Jack in the Box tacos. If you actually ate this food as an adult, you would never eat it again! But for some strange reason, you are still drawn to the food, it seems completely illogical.

In reality the logic is simple, you have an emotional attachment to the food you are eating. I can justify eating my favorite tacos because I think it will make me feel happy, content or calm, I am guessing you feel the same way about your food. You know the food is not good for you, but subconsciously you think it will. After a while you begin to believe the food will make you feel better and because our mind believes this, you do feel better, but the effect is short lived.

As the taco is disappearing, a bite at a time, the guilt kicks in. You might have guessed this does not stop me from eating one taco, or even my second! I am sure you know this feeling, and it is very frustrating. I know I should not be eating the greasy and oddly textured taco, but I really feel like eating it. I have the same cravings, longing and urge to devour that taco, the same as you.

Annihilating the taco, is a habit and this habit was learned through different ways. For me, I remember being very young, seven or eight years old maybe. I was on the way to the beach in Southern California with my family. I remember my mom and aunt, talking about Jack in the Box tacos. They talked about how good and greasy they are. They would especially be perfect to buy and take to the beach to eat. We were all happy and having a good time. It was a warm, sunny day at the beach, and we were going to play and enjoy ourselves. We got the tacos and they were the most delicious tacos in the world. I remember some gritty sand getting onto some of my taco but it didn’t matter, we were having a fantastic day. Important memories which are vivid typically are more influential than the everyday mundane memories.

Just the thought of getting a taco from Jack in the Box triggers good feelings and sends me into a taco craze! Sometimes the actual memory comes with it and sometimes it does not. It is important to understand how we relate feelings to different things in our lives, things like food, music or a voice.

For example, I used to love Aerosmith. I would listen to their songs over and over again, but never get sick of them. All this changed in the early 90′s when I took my then girlfriend to an Aerosmith concert. Things did not get well and since then I don’t care for Aerosmith much, each song reminds me of her.

It’s SoCal, the 70′s, my family has a van with pin stripes, and the interior was tangerine orange with matching carpet. Yes it makes me laugh too! I was about six years old and encountered a large black widow spider in this van. My parents made me and my brothers’ get out of the van quickly. For years I had an embarrassing fear of spiders. I was able to link it to this memory. I am now able to kill spiders, but if I see a big one I still get nervous, but nothing like it use to be.

When I hear my wife yelling my name, I know it is time for me to hide in the garage or look busy fast! Sometimes a stern voice makes me feel like I did something wrong or I am in trouble. Most people like me, feel like a child, especially when someone uses my first, middle and last name. This is just one more way we associate feelings or emotions, and hold on to those attachments.

The point of all this is to show you common sense examples of learned behaviors. Emotions associated with memories trigger very powerful, behind the scenes reactions and decisions in our minds. Take a moment and think about some powerful memories you have had and think about how they might relate to other things in your life.

Conversational Hypnosis:How to Become an Expert Hypnotist

Post date: September 16, 2009

Conversational Hypnosis is to have the ability to induce trance in another person. Without this skill in sharp condition you will have a very difficult time improving the lives of those around you. The ability to alter the state of mind has been something you probably have been reading about and possibly practicing for some time now.

If this is true then the next logical step in your education will be to refine and sharpen the trance induction skills you have been learning. To do this you must take all the skills you have been learning and keep them as fresh in your mind as possible. Many of these skills you will be able to use in trance induction as you learn to broaden your horizons in this area.

For now you should focus on the basics of becoming an expert at Conversational Hypnosis that is. The 4 Stage Protocol along with a couple of secret tips will give you the important and basic specifics for inducing a hypnotic trance. The skills and tips in this article will nearly guarantee you the ability to send your subject and those around you into hypnotic trances. These are all skills you should already be familiar with and if you are not then a brief refresher may help before you carry on. On another note, remember that these are the very basics and you will be learning many more layers of skills to add to these as your hypnosis education continues.

The 4 Stage Protocol is really the meat and potatoes of getting someone into a hypnotic trance. This set of rules or concepts contain all you need in order to create hypnotic trance in another person. The first step is to Absorb Attention. No matter what hypnotic effect or process you want to do with your subject you must always first absorb their attention. Without the attention of your listener you will not be able to continue in the area of inducing a trance. So make sure to practice getting peoples attention.

You will learn more ways to do this as you go on to other conversational hypnosis articles, all you need to know now is you simply must be able to get a persons attention totally focused on you to bring them into an altered state of mind or hypnotic trance. The second stage in the 4 Stage Protocol is a very important one, Bypass the Critical Factor. As you have read before the critical factor is the filter of the conscious mind that criticizes and analyzes all the information being sent in from outside sources.

It is imperative to make any type of progress with the betterment of life that you bypass the critical factor. Your listener must be able to agree and accept your suggestions on some level so you can not only seed them in but get a response from those suggestions. That brings us to the third stage, which is to Activate an Unconscious Response. This is simply getting any type of unconscious response from the person you are inducing. It can be any of the signals found in the signal recognitions system, an emotion or reaction to your suggestion that is communicated from an unconscious mind level.

A change in breathing, blinking and so on, as long as it is unconscious. This is important because without attaining the unconscious response you will have a difficult time leading it to a desired outcome. This brings you to the fourth and final stage in the 4 Stage Protocol, being to Lead the Unconscious Response to a Desired Result. When you recognize the different signals or unconscious responses you must take them and lead them into your desired result. This is a key hypnosis point and must not be underrated.

That result can be a thought process, action, idea or anything you want that will help in the persons goals of life change. Now that you have been reminded of the four stages you can set those stages in the back of your mind and concentrate on how to get someones attention. The fixation of attention can be done in many different ways. The method you use largely depends on the person and circumstance you are currently in.

You can attract their attention by telling them something that will interest them. You can attract their attention by asking questions that instill some curiosity. You can attract them down the rabbit hole by showing them something they want so they in turn want to follow you. All these are ways of attracting attention. The above list of ways to attract attention is great but sometimes it is just good to be direct. Simply ask them to direct their attention to what it is you are saying, doing or asking them to do. Humans normally like to comply, most like to please others and in asking them a very direct and simple thing will certainly get your listeners rapt attention.

Being simple and direct in asking for attention may seem like a contradiction since in Conversational Hypnosis you are usually trying to learn how to be indirect. But if you take a step back and think about the greatest hypnotists like Milton Erickson and others even they knew when to be direct. They knew when was the right time to make a direct request of a subject.

Being very direct is one of the best secrets in hypnosis. You should have no reason not to be direct, and often it can give you the best results. Making a clear concise request without embarrassment or hesitation is an important way to start in getting peoples attention. The second secret in hypnosis that relates to this is to learn how to move from being very direct to indirect as you improve your skill. After you have refined your ability to get attention with directness you will learn to move to more indirect ways of still getting the desired attention you need.

This is a way to make things less blatant and more smooth, more like they are taking place in the background of what you are really doing. You will learn how to accomplish the art of absorbing attention with more subtle communications. These things will happen in the background of conversation and be harder to spot by your listener. This is something that you will want to move on to after you have mastered the direct routes of absorbing attention. Do you want to become an expert at conversational hypnosis? Electronic Cigarettes, The USFDA, and Simple Facts

Post date: August 29, 2009

The FDA has recently taken aim at Electronic Cigarettes by releasing a report stating they are wildly unhealthy. The full report has not been made available to the public but already the results have been shrouded in controversy. Some argue the smoking alternatives can’t possibly be worse than the FDA approved drug Chantix which has already proven itself to be a dangerous substance (people have become suicidal, over-aggressive, severely depressed, etc).

Concerns are beginning to rise that perhaps the FDA is not conducting these tests on electronic cigarettes with the health of the general public in mind. Why is the FDA measuring the safety of these unapproved NRTs to regular health standards instead of contrasting it to the dangers posed by smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes?

I chose to self-examine Diethylene Glycol apart from what the FDA says. Looking at the Health New Zealand study for electronic cigarettes, the presence of Diethylene Glycol was not tested for. They seem to have based their tests on manufacturer ingredient lists and known tobacco carcinogens. So what is Diethylene Glycol? The MSDS shows that chronic exposure to Diethylene Glycol can cause lesions on the liver and kidneys, as well as damage to the same organs.

Examining the substance further, the carcinogenic or cancer causing properties of Diethylene Glycol proved moot as none were found and or expected to be found in the future. The toxicological data showed a lethal ingestion dose at a whopping 855.925g for humans, and that regular exposure was non-toxic. If any adverse reactions were to occur from inhalation, discontinuing use or removing oneself to fresh air is the recommended first aid treatment.

Is Diethylene Glycol the main ingredient in antifreeze? The EPA has this to say about antifreeze variations: “Antifreeze typically contains ethylene glycol as its active ingredient, but some manufacturers market propylene glycol-based antifreeze, which is less toxic to humans and pets. The acute, or short-term, toxicity of propylene glycol, especially in humans, is substantially lower than that of ethylene glycol.”

Either way, no matter which ingredient is active in the suspension, the stigma of antifreeze being dangerous actually comes from the fact that it is often disposed of improperly. This is only important because during service and use of the product, heavy metals contaminate the fluid (particularly dangerous is the lead contained in the metals). Yes, straight antifreeze is toxic, but its active ingredient is Ethylene Glycol and the main hazard stems from the heavy metals absorbed in used, recycled, or improperly discarded antifreeze.

The other stab the FDA took in their findings as at the presence of nitrosamines (carcinogens) in the electronic cigarette fluid. The type of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) found are actually naturally occurring in nicotine produced from tobacco leaves. The presence of TSNAs then increases with the strength of nicotine in the cartridges, according to the Health New Zealand study. On average, the cartridges contain 3.928 parts per billion (also noted as Ng or ppb).

The highest amount of TSNAs expected to be found in any “high-strength” nicotine cartridge refill for an e-cig is on average 8.183ppb. The FDA neglected to mention that Nicorette Gum, a long-standing NRT that is FDA approved, also contains about 8ppb. If we want to see why this amount is insignificant, we can compare it to unburned tobacco cigarettes which average approximately 1,230Ng.

Thinking back now to our original question, “Does the FDA have the public’s health in mind during their testing?” seems to take on a new light. It becomes increasingly apparent that perhaps their bigger concern is that a NRT device has hit the market that is very effective, just as safe as currently approved NRTs, but doesn’t line their pockets.

Ways To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

Post date: July 25, 2009

Smoking is bad for your health; you can get cancer, and die from it. You’ve heard it all before, but still you can’t seem to quit smoking cigarettes. Maybe you just haven’t tried hard enough, or often enough to succeed.

One of the most popular choices to quit smoking cigarettes is the method of going to the doctor and getting medicine. Though you have side effects that you will need to work through in this way. Not only that but you will still need to deal with those darn cravings when they happen too.

Another way to quit smoking cigarettes is to try hypnosis or even acupuncture. This way you will not have those side effects from any prescription medicines that may have been given to you by the doctor. There are different studies that do show some positive results from this way of quitting.

Eating seems to take the place of many cravings for most people. That’s why you should stock your home with healthy choices of food to eat. So when you crave a cigarette you can pull out a piece of celery or a carrot and eat that. This way you should be able to not smoke, and not gain weight.

Those people who’ve quit smoking cigarettes in the past will say that cravings are huge at times. Especially when you smell someone else smoking, that’s why you may need to seek out a group to join to help with quitting.

In the end the decision of how you go about your method to quit smoking cigarettes will be up to you. These are just a few samples to help you decide a way to stop smoking. Leading a life that is better and healthier for you, one that will not have you suffering from health problems. Though depending on how many years you’ve smoked you still may find health problems facing you.

Hypnosis To Quit Smoking Is More Effective Than Other Products

Post date: July 9, 2009

There are lots of products on the market today that claim to help people quit smoking. They promise that you will reduce your cravings and stop within a certain amount of time. They also promise that you will be cured with no side effects. While there may be some truth to this, most people cannot quit because they have an addiction which is based on the psyche. This is why hypnosis to quit smoking will actually work. Let’s look at the other methods you can find.

Patches: You can find plenty of different patches on the market. They all claim to help you quit smoking easily and safely. They use patches that you stick onto your arm usually. These patches contain small traces of nicotine and perhaps some other ingredients. These are all aimed to help you quit by giving you moderated amounts and lowering them over time.

While these may work initially, most people start smoking again at some stage. This is because they have not cured the root of the problem to start with, like hypnosis will.

Nicotine Chewing Gums: There are tons of gums you can chew that claim to reduce nicotine cravings. This is not really because they are curing your cravings, but because they too, are supplementing the nicotine intake. Yes, this is a safer way to get a nicotine fix than smoking, but can also be harmful. People who smoke that are stressed use the cigarettes as a crutch, so by using the gum, they simply replace the one with the other.

With hypnosis you will actually be able to find out how you deal with stress and why you choose cigarettes to cope. It will be able to pin point the problem and will actually block out the addiction from your mind.

With the two common products for stopping smoking, you can see that they are not really cured. They simply bide you time and give you relief for a while. Most people go back to smoking once they stop using the products, or perhaps a few months later. Hypnosis to quit smoking will work once.
