7 Ways To Control Your Urge To Smoke

Post date: November 28, 2009

It is a lengthy process to quit smoking. It can take you everything from a few weeks or months to several years. The exact time it takes you to quit can vary, but no matter what it is important that you have some kind of plan to fight against your urge to smoke.

All people will sooner or later feel a very strong urge to smoke when they are trying to quit smoking. And it is the way you handle those situations that will decide if you success or not. If you are prepared for the situation and have a strong willpower, you can continue on you stop smoking path.

Take the time to decide exactly when you typically smoke. For example, after meals, after a jog around the block, or even after your shower each morning. Knowing when you typically smoke will put you in a good position to create a plan to combat the urge.

Come up with a plan to attack the urge. It can be a simple solution like a stress ball to keep your hands busy or a piece of candy for your urge to have something in your mouth. If you enjoy the feeling of a clean mouth you can brush your teeth every time you have the urge to smoke. Or you can take a piece of gum.

Avoid all temptations. If you are going out for a meal, make sure to get placed in the no smoking area. Stay away from tobacco stores and do also try to limit your time around other smokers. If you are not continuously around cigarettes, it will be easier to resist the temptation.

Remove all smoking instruments from your home. This includes lighters, matches and ashtrays. And air the room to get rid of the smell of cigarettes. Products like Febreeze can also be a great help to get rid of the smell that can urge you to smoke.

If you are having a place where you normally smoke, it could be a good idea to rearrange your this area. By breaking the routines it will be easier to resist the temptation to smoke. This advice works especially well, if you typically smoke at the same, few places in your home. So if you normally watch television in your favorite chair while you are smoking, try to remove the chair (or the television). Then it will be much easier to resist the temptation to light a cigarette.

Write down your goals to stop smoking. What might seem like a minor detail actually have a huge impact on the success factor. If you just tell yourself that it might be a good idea to quit the cigarettes, it is easier for you to cheat and give up to the urge. With goals on paper, you will be more likely to follow them. The same applies for losing weight, doing more exercise etc. Written goals can increase responsibility significantly.

Never discount yourself. You will be much more capable of the success if you are certain that you will succeed. Belief is everything. It will help you to be strong when the urge comes. If you are deciding to slip up intentionally, you will find it much harder to get back again. But if you hold on to your devotion to stop smoking you will find it much easier to handle the urge to smoke.

How Did You Quit Smoking When You Found Out You Were Pregnant?

Post date: November 27, 2009

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I quit that day – no problem.
Now that I’m pregnant again – I’m having a harder time. Any suggestions?
I know it’s easy to say – just quit, think of the baby. I know, I know. Just asking for suggestions on how to make it easier.
Thanks in advance. And no thanks to the criticism in advance.
