How can I quit smoking when I drink?
Davis T asked:
I quit smoking cigarettes about six months ago, but everytime I start drinking when someone offers me a cigarette I just say “Sure!” And I **** it! Sometimes I can smoke a whole pack that night if I’m drinking, and then the next day when I’m sober I don’t care for cigarettes at all. I don’t want to and won’t stop drinking, so how can I stop smoking when I do drink? Any advice?

If you have quit then say NO. If you say sure then you have not actually quit smoking. If you have a problem smoking when drinking just hang around others who do not smoke when your having a drink this should curb the urge.

I ****** on lollipops. It worked for me. Made the beer taste better too
I found I needed something in my hands and felt ***** without a cigarette. The other think I did was figure out how much money I spent in a year on smoking then went and bought a ring at that price. So I felt guilty when I saw the ring and a smoke in the same hand.

I’ve suffered from this same problem, myself.
The best thing would be to stop drinking altogether, or stop drinking with people who smoke.
Smoking cigarettes is like being an alcoholic once you’ve quit: you’ll always be a smoker, and thus vulnerable to the habit, especially when you’re drinking.

I have the same problem as you but a bit worse – see, if I have that cigarette while drinking then I crave one the next morning, and later the next day, etc… At last in your case you claim you can ignore the cravings the next day.
Therefore, did you consider not worrying about a few smokes when you are drinking? Not like a handful of cigarettes will kill you, unless of course you drink everyday.
Some things have worked for me with varying levels of success:
-Change what you drink. I used to drink beer heavily as a smoker, now as a non smoker I switched to martinis, scotch or whiskey
-Frequent only non-smoking bars. Most states have outlawed smoking in bars anyway, this helped me as there were fewere people to bum from
-Treat yourself to the occasional cigar as your reward for not smoking while drinking.

I think you need to control your willpower when your buzzed. I do that a lot where I get buzzed and I send eccentric e-mails to my professors and stuff (nothing bad, but I don’t know if they find it annoying, my old professor liked it because he said he likes knowing what’s in his students’ heads).
Drinking makes us all more passionate about ‘something’, and I guess it’s how it comes out that makes you a problem drinker or not. But I don’t blame you, people seem to agree smoking is worse, of course my uncle was a heavy drinker/smoker and it took him like 30 years before it finally killed him (even then he killed himself). I don’t know why people can get cancer over the silliest of things, and others can abuse there bodies to death w/o dying.
Oh yea, I remember the point, anywho I learned to control some of those benign “dorky” habits when drinking especially via internet. Meh I ramble….Best Answer!
