Any change in health directives is cause for the advice from a doctor. And remember that replacing one source of nicotine with another is only a step, not a solution.

A very common method is what is referred to colloquially as the patch. This is a trans dermal nicotine delivery system, meaning through the skin. A patch is place on the upper arm, or a thigh, or some place similar, and the drug is slowly absorbed into the system, thereby curbing the cravings for smoking by providing the addictive substance. They come in different strengths so you can decrease the use over time.

Chewing gum is also a delivery system that has remained popular over the years. It has a dose of the drug in it, you can get to it quickly, and the drug is absorbed very quickly through the sensitive tissues in the mouth. Like the patch, though, it is still delivering the addictive substance, so care must be taken to not abuse the gum while quitting the smoking.

Speaking of gum, regular chewing gum has been a standby for those wishing to quit, and for good reason. It can actually work. Habits are broken by distracting the mind from the craving, and the whole ritual of chewing a piece of gum can help do that. You will also be occupying your fingers and your mouth, both of which stay busy while puffing away on cigarettes.

For the fancier quitter, consider an electronic cigarette. These are increasing in popularity due to many areas that now ban smoking, but they are valuable tools to the quitting smoker as well. You can adjust the dosage of the hit of product in an attempt to wean yourself off of it. They also carry the added benefit of not being actually smoked in the sense of sucking smoke from burning vegetation into you lungs. This eliminates many additives and chemicals from the mix.

Perhaps the old tried and true method of cold turkey is still the best, but it is surely a difficult route to take. You can try the chewing gum, or carrot sticks, or cinnamon sticks, or chewing on a blade of grass, but at some point you will have to rely on will power in order to not take in more of the drug you are trying to quit. Again, see your doctor and discuss if the sensible use of a substitution system, or flat out abstinence is best for you.
