How Can I Make My 1981 Mercedes Stop Smoking.?
It is a !981 Mercedes 300D that i brought from a car dealer about 3yrs ago. It has a inline 5 cylinder diesel non turbo. When it is ideling, the car puffs out blue smoke. When i am driving it down the road, the engine stop smoking but has a loud tapping sound. It has 200,000 miles and comes with all the options and the body is in good condition. I was wondering what kind of turbo i can put on there. Now ia driving a 1999 Mercedes E55.

Maybe needs new piston rings, or the valve seats need to be fixed.

I have an 82 300SD that just passed 300,000 on the five-cylinder inline engine and it, too, smokes on idle, a bit, and it kicks out quite a cloud when the turbo engages. This is normal. It is a diesel. The tapping sound is not good, however, and may be from somewhere other than the engine – such as the suspension. Get that checked out before the wheels come off.

Take away its cigarette? No, seriously check to see if you have oil leaking into the gas mixture if its blackish smoke. The tapping is coming from the pistons, your going to throw a rod if you dont get it fixed. And if you do that you will ruin the engine block.

The smoke is normal on MB diesels when is much is because in the flute you need to replace the seals . About that noise on the engine ” put 1/4 oil transmission on the tank it will smoke for 5 to 10 minutes after that it will run very nice y did that on mine ones a year, also, use Red Lion additive for the tank every 3 tanks it kills the algae on the tank and also use a injector cleaner with 200,000 mile you just start braking in the engine on MB diesels . change the oil and filters that is the key on MB diesel they last forever.

take a blank piece of paper, start your engine, put the paper against the exhaust, just for a few seconds,on the paper you will see what the problem is,my best guess is,that you have oil in it,it will show you on the paper..
