How Can I Get My Downstairs Neighbor To Stop Smoking?
The problem is that the smoke comes up through the floor, and my wife and I can’t stand it. We have asked them to stop several times, and it doesn’t happen everyday, but each time they do it is very irritating.

So, lemme see; you’re too cheap to fix the floor and you want them to stop smoking in their flat, because of that?
Wow, you’ve got to be the most reasonable people on earth.
Merry Christmas!!!!

There is nothing you can do that will get them to willingly give up smoking. Unless you have a magic wand or a proven technique to break the addiction – how can they possibly stop smoking even if they willingly wanted to? Buy yourself an air filter and filter your air to remove the smoke or move. It is not up to the downstairs neighbor to stop smoking simply because it bothers you, it is up to you to find a solution within your own space that you can do to manage the issue.

You can’t! If you kindly pointed out to them that their smoking is affecting you and they do not seem to care, there is nothing that you can do to make them stop smoking. The harder you push the more they will resist. Unfortunately, this is human nature.
Good luck!

Unless the laws in your city prohibit smoking in ones own apartment, which I doubt they do, then you are OUT OF LUCK. Stop griping, it’s HIS home. I’m a non-smoker but you two are way over the top in such criticism.
If you cannotn insolate your apartment from the smoke from his apartment, then move. If the building is so flemsy that smoke comes up through the floor, it probably is a dangerous structure in the first place!!! Plastic sheeting could be put on the floor, with wall to wall carpet over the top, unless the smell of smoke is in your head, or coming through your windows. You can SEAL yourself in the tomb, and use a/c all the time.
NO sympathy for you, sorry

MOVE…he pays his rent he has the right to smoke if he wants as a smoker if you asked me that depending on your tone, I would smoke even more and make sure I blew it right into the airvents or set my ash tray right by the vents. You non smokers can’t control everybody especially in their own home.

Hard question. If it really bothers you that much, I would look for a new place to live that is smoke free. Complaining to the landlord is useless unless the house is suppose to be smoke free. They have a right to smoke in their own home.

Suck it up and get a life. You probably do plenty of crap that annoys them too. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

i don’t think you can get them to stop, but maybe you can let them know it is going into your apt. and if they could please smoke out side, also if it is going into your apt. i would call the landlord and complain that your place is not insulated very well at all and have it fixed

There’s no way for you to get your neighbours to stop smoking. Like many people have already said, unless your in a non-smoking building, they are well within their rights to smoke in their home.
You need to find a way to fix the problem in your own home. Get a good air purifier to absorb the smoke. You can also get those glad air fresheners.
Other then that, learn to live with it or move out.

burn them out or report them to the bleeding harts of the second floor club

Honestly, if you live in a building where smoking is allowed, and you you have already talked to your neighbor about it, there’s not much else you can do. You might be able to convince your neighbor to smoke outside, but it seems unlikely that he’ll stop smoking for you. Perhaps a solution is to move to a non-smoking building.

you live in an apartment. you can not make them stop smoking any more than they can tell you to stop making love and making all those squeaking noises from the bed movements. what you need to do is find housing that you and only you can control you’re own environment. when you live in a apartment building you are subject to a lot of things that (within reason) that you may not like.see if the maintenance guy can seal the plumbing areas of both you’re apt. and theirs and any common areas that may let the smoke pass through. due to fair and equal housing laws
mandated by the government the lease holder cannot pick and choose where tenants are placed. this answer is under the assumption that you are talking about tobacco smoke. most anything else i would bring it up to the managements attention.

The only thing you can do is to either stick it out or move. Unless you are in a non smoking building, then mgmt must make them stop or they must move out. Sorry ,but that’s the way it is in appartment life.

I don’t think they will stop unless they want to, regardless of your efforts. Nicotine is a drug and a very addictive one. What about them smoking outside?
